Lobby Days are important events that give VAMA m embers an opportunity to engage in the legislative process and build relationships with elected officials representing the various districts where member properties are located. Attendees will meet with legislators face-to-face to educate them on specific bills of importance to the rental housing industry. Staff will provide a briefing on issues pending before the legislature, talking points and other materials and will facilitate meetings with Delegates and Senators.
We will convene at 8:00 a.m. for breakfast at the Omni Richmond Hotel, in downtown Richmond. Our government affairs staff will present a briefing during breakfast regarding the issues we will be discussing with legislators and what to expect as we work the halls of the General Assembly Building. From the Omni, we will walk to the Pocahontas Building, the current home of the General Assembly offices, so that we can meet with legislators and discuss issues of significance to VAMA.
During the lunch hour, visit the historic Capitol building, originally designed by Thomas Jefferson, where and take in the legislative process in action from the House and Senate viewing galleries and grab a quick lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area. Upon adjournment of the House and Senate floor sessions continue meeting with delegates and senators.
These brief meetings will be a tremendous opportunity to educate our elected officials about bills of interest to commercial and multifamily property owners and managers and to build positive working relationships in the process.
There are parking garages around the Omni and General Assembly building you can self park for a fee. If you are staying the night at the Omni, valet parking is $27 for overnight parking.
Business attire is appropriate for the day and our time in the General Assembly Building and Capitol. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as the day will include much walking, stairs and even brick/cobblestone surfaces. There is not always a coat rack available at the Capital nor at the General Assembly Building therefore, we recommend wearing a coat that is easy to carry.
Participating members will need to pass through security and metal detectors at the entrances of the Capitol and General Assembly Building. Please leave all unlicensed, concealed weapons at home.
What to Bring
Printed materials will be provided by our government affairs staff. Do be sure, though, to bring a stack of business cards to leave with the legislative offices that we will be visiting.
